Beyond the Classroom
Experiential Learning
Internships are a key part of the major. Many students work with advertising agencies, media companies, nonprofits, or in‑house marketing teams. These experiences help you build confidence, learn workplace skills, and make connections in the industry.
Our faculty has a mix of industry professionals and teaching and research scholars. Whether your interests are in a career as an advertiser or going on to get a Ph.D., we have a mentor for you. Our list includes anchors and news directors, a producer for HGTV, niche specialties like sports broadcasting, and experts on rhetorical theory, political communication, and the psychological effects of video games.
Each year, the School of Communication offers a faculty‑led study abroad experience atin Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. The program begins with a one‑credit spring course on campus, followed by two weeks of immersive study in Switzerland. After returning, you’ll complete additional online coursework during the first summer session. This program gives you the chance to explore global communication while earning academic credit in a unique international setting.
